TotalEnergies has announced a new acquisition from PETRONAS, involving interests in multiple offshore blocks in Malaysia and one block in Indonesia. This move was revealed during the Energy Asia 2025 event held in Kuala Lumpur. The acquired licenses cover an area exceeding 100,000 square kilometers and are at various stages of development.
The company will hold a 50% operated working interest in Blocks SK301b and SK313 alongside PETRONAS through its subsidiary Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd. These blocks have significant gas discoveries estimated at over 4 trillion cubic feet, which are anticipated to support gas supply to Malaysia LNG starting from 2030. TotalEnergies will also acquire interests in several exploration blocks offshore Malaysia, pending customary regulatory approvals.
This transaction follows TotalEnergies’ acquisition of SapuraOMV’s assets in December 2024, further consolidating its presence in South-East Asia with Malaysia as a strategic base.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, emphasized the company’s established role as a major gas producer in Malaysia: “We are pleased to further expand our presence in the country, which we see as a strategic platform for our future low-cost, low-carbon production and cash-flow growth.”
Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik, President and Group CEO of PETRONAS, highlighted the long-standing collaboration between the two companies: “Today’s signing marks another significant step forward in our shared commitment to responsible growth and long-term value creation.”
Additionally, TotalEnergies has signed an agreement to acquire a 24.5% interest from PETRONAS in the Bobara block offshore Indonesia for oil exploration purposes.
TotalEnergies has been active in Malaysia since 1985 and is now the third-largest gas operator there following its recent acquisitions. The company employs around 300 people locally and holds various interests across several blocks within the region.
