TotalEnergies and South Atlantic Petroleum have signed a Production Sharing Contract for two offshore exploration licenses, PPL 2000 and PPL 2001, in Nigeria. TotalEnergies holds an 80% stake and operates the blocks, while South Atlantic Petroleum holds the remaining 20%. The permits were awarded following the 2024 Exploration Round organized by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.
The exploration blocks cover about 2,000 square kilometers in the West Delta basin. The initial work program includes drilling one firm exploration well.
“TotalEnergies is honored to be the first international company to be awarded exploration licenses in a bid round in Nigeria in more than a decade, marking a new milestone in our long-term partnership with the country,” said Kevin McLachlan, Senior Vice-President Exploration at TotalEnergies. “These promising block captures are fully aligned with our strategy of strengthening our Exploration portfolio with drill-ready and high impact prospects, that have the potential for low-cost and low-emissions developments from new discoveries in our core areas of expertise.”
TotalEnergies has operated in Nigeria for over sixty years and employs more than 1,800 people across various business segments. In 2024, Nigeria contributed significantly to TotalEnergies’ hydrocarbon production with an output of 209,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The company also manages a distribution network that includes around 540 service stations nationwide. TotalEnergies states it is committed to supporting socio-economic development and working with local communities.
Globally, TotalEnergies is active in about 120 countries and employs over 100,000 people. The company’s operations span oil, biofuels, natural gas, biogas, low-carbon hydrogen, renewables and electricity.
