TotalEnergies is advancing its efforts to decarbonize air transportation by producing and distributing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). By 2028, the company aims to produce over half a million tons of SAF annually, exceeding the European blending mandate of 6% set for 2030.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, stated, “TotalEnergies is taking action to meet the strong demand from the aviation industry to reduce its carbon footprint. Sustainable aviation fuels are essential to bring the air industry’s CO2 emissions down immediately. Their development is fully aligned with our approach to get to net zero, together with society.”
The Grandpuits biorefinery will be transformed into a zero-crude platform with a production capacity of 230,000 tons per year by 2026. TotalEnergies has partnered with SARIA for feedstock supply. The La Mède biorefinery will produce 15,000 tons of SAF this year for distribution in southern France. In Normandy and Antwerp refineries, coprocessing projects are underway or planned for increased SAF production.
TotalEnergies supplies SAF-blended aviation fuel to several French airports and has signed significant contracts with airlines like Air France-KLM and Volotea. These agreements aim to reduce flight emissions through long-term SAF purchases.
In collaboration with aerospace groups such as Airbus and Safran, TotalEnergies is researching the impact of SAF on aircraft performance. The company’s Solaize research center focuses on overcoming challenges related to feedstock for increasing SAF production.
