TotalEnergies and CMA CGM have announced a new joint venture aimed at developing LNG bunkering facilities in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region. This collaboration marks the first time a shipping line will work with an energy provider to co-develop and operate such facilities.
The partnership will see the deployment of a 20,000 m³ LNG bunker vessel by 2028, underlining their commitment to accelerating maritime decarbonization. TotalEnergies will supply CMA CGM with up to 360,000 tons of LNG per year until 2040 as part of a long-term agreement.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, expressed pride in contributing to the development of an LNG bunkering supply chain alongside CMA CGM. “LNG is today the most mature and immediately available solution to reduce the environmental footprint of maritime transport,” he said.
Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM Group, highlighted that this joint venture represents a significant step in supporting energy transition in shipping. “For the first time, a shipping company and an energy provider will jointly operate an LNG bunkering vessel,” he stated.
The initiative aims to expand LNG infrastructure in Europe by positioning a new bunker vessel in Rotterdam by 2028. The venture intends to offer comprehensive logistics services for vessels operating in the ARA region.
This partnership builds on previous collaborations between TotalEnergies and CMA CGM dating back to 2017 when they signed agreements for annual LNG supplies. Both companies are committed to advancing low-carbon marine solutions.
TotalEnergies is recognized as one of the world’s largest players in liquefied natural gas (LNG), while CMA CGM is noted for its efforts toward achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050 through investments in next-generation vessels powered by alternative energies like LNG.
The creation of this joint venture is pending regulatory approvals but signals both companies’ dedication towards sustainable practices within their industries.
