Japan’s Tokyo Fire Department has selected Airbus Helicopters for the delivery of a new H225 helicopter, according to a contract announced on July 28, 2025. The new aircraft will replace an older model as part of the department’s ongoing effort to modernise its fleet.

The agency uses helicopters for several critical operations, including aerial firefighting, search and rescue, emergency medical services, and disaster response. The latest acquisition is expected to strengthen operational readiness in these areas.

Jean-Luc Alfonsi, Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters in Japan, stated: “For nearly six decades, Airbus has stood alongside the Tokyo Fire Department in their unwavering commitment to public safety and disaster response. The Tokyo Fire Department’s continued trust in the H225 reflects the reliability and adaptability that our helicopters bring to every mission. With its proven versatility and endurance across all conditions, the H225 is well equipped to support their lifesaving work for years to come.”

The new H225 is designed for urgent operations. It features a built-in search and rescue mode for quick target detection, onboard stretchers for immediate medical care, and a belly-mounted water tank for aerial firefighting.

The Tokyo Fire Department began operating helicopters in 1967 with its first Allouette III model. Its current fleet includes three H225s and three AS365s from Airbus. These helicopters are dedicated to serving the community through various air-based missions.

The H225 belongs to Airbus’s Super Puma family of helicopters and is known for strong performance under challenging conditions. It offers advanced avionics and autopilot systems aimed at improving safety while easing pilot workload.

Across Japan, 24 H225 helicopters are used by government agencies such as the Ministry of Defence as well as parapublic organisations. Their roles include search and rescue operations, firefighting from the air, VIP transport, and moving personnel or goods.
