Siemens and CAPHENIA have signed a partnership agreement to support the scale-up of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production. The agreement was formalized with representatives from both companies, including Nicky Ahnert, Jürgen Giegerich, Frank Knauf from Siemens, and Dr. Mark Misselhorn and Dr. Andreas Waibel from CAPHENIA.

CAPHENIA operates a plasma Boudouard reactor at the Frankfurt-Höchst industrial park, which plays a role in producing synthetic jet fuels. The demand for SAF is increasing due to regulatory requirements such as the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED), which sets binding blending quotas and imposes penalties for non-compliance. By 2050, it is estimated that the global aviation sector will require about 500 million tons of SAF each year. Currently, SAF makes up less than one percent of worldwide kerosene consumption, highlighting the need for efficient and scalable production technologies.

Siemens has emphasized its commitment to sustainability through initiatives like the DEGREE framework, which focuses on decarbonization, ethics, governance, resource efficiency, equity, and employability according to its official website.
