Siemens has introduced the Sinamics S220 drive system, a product designed to address the needs of digital transformation in industrial environments. The new drive system focuses on generating high-quality field data, which Siemens says will help enable new business models within Industry 4.0. High-frequency data transmission for predictive maintenance is facilitated through the X128 interface.

According to Siemens, integration with the TIA Portal and the use of DriveSim Designer for virtual commissioning aim to improve engineering workflows. The system also includes new assistants and an undo function to make operation easier. Users can access the Smart Drive Interface either as a compact panel (SDI S220) directly on the CU320-3 or as a remote version (SDI Pro), which features a larger display and web server. An optional Smart WiFi adapter allows for flexible remote access.

The Sinamics S220 is intended to be flexible and scalable for various industrial applications. At launch, air-cooled motor modules are available in both booksize and chassis designs, with a voltage range from 3AC 380 to 480 V. Rated current spans from 3 A (1.1 kW) up to 1,518 A (900 kW), with the possibility of expanding up to 6,984 kW through parallel connection of up to eight units. Regenerative active infeeds from 210 kW to 921 kW are also available and can be scaled through parallel connection. Air-cooled universal modules are introduced as well, capable of functioning as either motor or active line modules. Six devices cover the full range of functions and performance for spare parts scenarios, allowing for quick adaptation to changing requirements.

Siemens states that with software version 6.6, the Sinamics S220 brings advancements in plant safety by reducing the safety cycle from 12 ms to 4 ms, which enables faster reactions and higher productivity. Automatic background tests are included for uninterrupted operation, and offline parameterizable safety functions aim to simplify engineering tasks. The drive is SIL 3 certified for all operating states and provides this level of safety in critical applications.

The development process followed IEC 62443-4-1 standards and was independently certified by TÜV SÜD. Integrated safety features include user and access control, encrypted drive data, integrity checks, and authentication for firmware and configuration data.

Siemens emphasizes sustainability with the Sinamics S220 through its compact design, use of resource-saving materials, reparability, and recyclability. Industrial Edge applications allow users to capture and visualize energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. The product has an ISO 14021 certified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), documenting its environmental impact throughout its lifecycle.

“With Sinamics S220, Siemens presents a drive system that combines sustainability and performance. Its compact design saves space while resource-saving materials and high reparability and recyclability contribute to reducing carbon impact. Industrial Edge applications enable the capture and visualization of energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. The ISO 14021 certified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) documents its environmental performance over the entire lifecycle, underscoring Siemens’ commitment to sustainable industrial solutions,” according to Siemens.
