Siemens Mobility has announced the introduction of its Charger B+AC, North America’s first battery-electric powered passenger locomotive. This new addition to Siemens’ portfolio aims to provide an alternative propulsion solution tailored specifically for the North American market. The Charger B+AC is manufactured in the United States and is designed to enhance operational efficiency and flexibility for transit agencies.

Andre Rodenbeck, CEO Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, stated, “Expanding our portfolio with the Charger B+AC emphasizes our dedication to providing the best propulsion solutions for every customer need.” He highlighted that Siemens Mobility is empowering operators with a growing range of battery, hydrogen, and hybrid technologies.

The Charger platform from Siemens Mobility has already seen success across North America with over 400 locomotives sold. The new Charger B+AC builds on this foundation by removing the diesel engine and integrating a modular battery system and pantograph. This allows it to draw electrical power from overhead catenary wires and switch seamlessly to battery mode where catenary power is unavailable.

These locomotives can operate at speeds up to 125 mph under catenary power and run on battery power for up to 100 miles. They are compliant with Buy America requirements and offer flexible charging options including catenary, plug-in, and dynamic braking.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and Metro-North Railroad in New York have ordered 13 of these locomotives as part of their railcar fleet expansion. This order marks a significant step forward in adopting sustainable rail solutions.

Siemens Mobility’s approach includes a future-proof modular battery system, familiar operator interface, and a large spare parts pool across North America. These features ensure that customers can adapt train length according to ridership needs using existing coaches.
