SAP SE has opened a new defense innovation hub in Munich, Germany, aiming to support digital readiness for modern defense operations. The opening comes amid increasing geopolitical tensions and evolving security threats that require armed forces to enhance interoperability and resilience.
The facility brings together SAP’s expertise in software, data, artificial intelligence, and industry knowledge. The goal is to help military and security organizations integrate digital systems into key areas such as personnel management, logistics, procurement, manufacturing, training, and maintenance. These capabilities are designed to form the foundation for effective real-world defense operations.
“Defense readiness today is no longer defined by equipment alone: It is defined by how well people, processes and partners are connected,” said Thomas Saueressig, member of the Executive Board of SAP SE for Customer Services & Delivery. “In an increasingly volatile security environment, armed forces need systems they can trust—systems that are resilient, interoperable and sovereign. With our defense innovation hub, SAP is demonstrating how digital platforms can strengthen operational readiness while preserving control, compliance and freedom of action.”
The choice of Munich as the location leverages the region’s established network of startups, industry leaders, academic institutions like the Technical University of Munich (TUM), and government agencies. This collaborative ecosystem was highlighted during the launch event through demonstrations showing how SAP’s solutions can connect people and resources securely across defense supply chains.
“The Technical University of Munich is pleased to collaborate with SAP in translating advanced research into operational security and defense capabilities,” said Chiara Manfletti, head of TUM’s Aerospace and Geodesy Department and scientific lead of the new TUM Security and Defense Alliance. “As technological innovation accelerates, strategic partnerships such as this ensure that cutting-edge scientific developments can be rapidly deployed to strengthen operational readiness.”
The launch precedes the upcoming Munich Security Conference where topics like resilience and technological sovereignty will be central discussions. During this period SAP plans continued engagement with policymakers on how digital tools can address current challenges in global security.
