SAP SE has announced the launch of its EU AI Cloud, a new step in its plan for European digital sovereignty. The company says this initiative brings together all previous efforts into one strategy focused on providing sovereign artificial intelligence and cloud services tailored to Europe.

According to SAP, the EU AI Cloud allows customers to choose the level of sovereignty and deployment that fits their needs. Options include using SAP’s own data centers, trusted European infrastructure, or a fully managed solution on-site. The offering is designed to support EU data residency and ensure organizations can meet regulatory and operational requirements.

SAP is working with Cohere to expand advanced AI capabilities through Cohere North. This integration will be part of the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), which aims to help customers with strict data residency needs build production-ready AI into business processes. “Together, SAP and Cohere will help enterprises unlock deeper insights, more accurate decision support and more intelligent automation across complex workflows without compromising on sovereignty, compliance or performance,” according to the company.

The EU AI Cloud relies on an ecosystem that includes partners such as Cohere, Mistral AI, OpenAI, and others. These partnerships allow businesses to use various partner offerings as SaaS (Software as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service), or IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service). Deployment can occur either within SAP’s infrastructure or with trusted European partners. SAP states: “This collaborative approach ensures that European enterprises and public sector organizations benefit from the latest AI innovations securely, in full compliance with European standards and with the sovereignty and flexibility they require.”

Deployment options for the EU AI Cloud include:

– SAP Sovereign Cloud on SAP Cloud Infrastructure in Europe: An IaaS built with open-source technologies operating entirely within SAP’s European data center network.
– SAP Sovereign Cloud On-Site: Infrastructure managed by SAP but located at customer-owned or selected data centers for maximum sovereignty.
– Selected global hyperscalers per market: For those choosing commercial SaaS solutions on major cloud providers with added sovereignty features.
– Delos Cloud: A secure option in Germany aimed at supporting public sector transformation while meeting country-specific requirements.
