Allianz Commercial has released a report highlighting the increasing threat of wildfires globally. The report stresses the importance for companies to understand how their assets and operations could either initiate or be affected by wildfires.
The report notes that the severity and frequency of wildfires have increased, leading to a significant rise in related losses, which have become six times more expensive over the past decade. Regulatory challenges and litigation related to wildfire liabilities are also increasing, emphasizing the need for robust risk management strategies and comprehensive wildfire management plans. Technological advancements are improving detection and suppression capabilities.
According to Allianz Commercial’s Emerging Risk Trend Talk report, climate change, human activities, and evolving land use patterns have contributed to an increase in the frequency, severity, and geographic occurrence of wildfires. These fires pose substantial risks across various sectors worldwide.
The recent Los Angeles wildfires in January 2025 exemplify how regions like the western US, western Canada, southern and eastern Australia, and southern Europe are highly exposed to wildfires. Fires are now also occurring in areas not previously considered at risk, such as northern Canada, Scandinavia, Russia, and South Korea.
Wildfire seasons are beginning earlier and lasting longer, affecting resource sharing within regions. Catastrophic wildfires are becoming larger and more frequent. The impacts of recent severe wildfires in terms of property damage and fatalities have been greater than those experienced in some regions for at least 50 to 100 years.
Climate change is elevating risks by increasing fuel loads, drying fuels, strengthening winds, boosting lightning activity, and promoting invasive flammable species. The last decade has seen the warmest years since 1850 recorded between 2015-2024.
Changing land use intensifies wildfire exposures particularly in ‘wildland urban interface’ areas where human development expands into fire-prone vegetation zones. This expansion increases exposure alongside longer electricity lines and roadways—both key ignition sources. Global insured losses from wildfires rose from $8.7 billion in the 2000s to $56.3 billion in the 2010s.
Various sectors face significant exposures to damage and business interruption due to wildfires including utilities and energy, real estate and construction, agriculture, and transportation industries. Regulatory challenges related to wildfire liabilities further necessitate robust risk management strategies.
Strategies suggested include creating defensible spaces around properties using non-combustible building materials while managing vegetation effectively. Companies should develop effective wildfire preparedness programs regularly reviewed for updates.
Technological tools such as seasonal forecasting with drone surveys or GIS mapping along with thermal imaging systems offer innovative solutions for modeling fire risks effectively noted by Allianz Commercial’s report.
“Businesses should identify the risk for their operations to trigger wildfires or be impacted by wildfires started by human or natural causes,” says Michael Bruch from Allianz Commercial advising businesses on developing appropriate wildfire management plans tailored specifically towards operational needs.
