Economic growth in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has become a contentious issue, with opposition parties challenging the government’s portrayal of the situation. During a state parliament session in Schwerin, CDU parliamentary group leader Daniel Peters criticized the red-red coalition government for allegedly overstating economic growth figures. He claimed that instead of the reported 3.3 percent growth for 2023, the actual figure was only 0.2 percent.
Peters accused the government of dishonesty and called for better economic conditions, noting that unemployment has risen and over 6,000 jobs have been lost in recent years. “Inaction is justified with false figures,” he said, emphasizing poor framework conditions affecting small and medium-sized businesses.
Speakers from the SPD and Left Party countered that statistical corrections are common and argued that Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s economy remains robust compared to other federal states. AfD MP Martin Schmidt highlighted ongoing issues with wages and purchasing power in the region.
Jutta Wegner from the Green Party urged more focus on securing skilled workers amid demographic changes, while René Domke of the FDP criticized bureaucratic constraints on businesses.
Economics Minister Wolfgang Blank acknowledged some criticism but pointed to significant investments like Ypsomed’s as evidence of confidence in the state’s business environment. He expressed optimism about future growth driven by federal investments and naval orders following a shipyard bankruptcy in 2022.
“The state government is on track,” Blank asserted, emphasizing commitment to sustainable economic policy. He also called on the federal government to reduce energy costs for businesses and citizens.
Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig faced accusations from Peters of “statistical sleight of hand” during an economic policy debate. The opposition argues that legal regulations imposed by SPD and Left Party hinder economic progress without providing sufficient growth incentives.
