The Netherlands holds significant potential to become a leading force in artificial intelligence (AI) within Europe. Despite representing only 2.8% of Europe’s population, the country accounts for 8% of the continent’s AI talent pool and attracts a notable percentage of global AI professionals. However, this potential has not yet translated into leadership in European AI development.

A new research report titled “State of AI in the Netherlands: Igniting Europe’s Hidden AI Powerhouse,” published by Prosus in collaboration with Dealroom.co and Techleap, proposes an action plan to elevate the Netherlands to a leadership position in European AI. The report outlines eight specific actions:

1. Develop infrastructure for critical systems and models, such as an AI Gigafactory.
2. Establish an AI hub in Amsterdam to centralize talent and capital.
3. Attract top-tier AI talent through initiatives like fast visas and increased venture capital budgets.
4. Encourage local pension funds to address growth capital needs.
5. Concentrate R&D efforts from Big Tech companies within the Netherlands.
6. Initiate a national campaign to boost AI adoption across Dutch society.
7. Launch an AI XPrize competition for innovative moonshot ideas.
8. Position the government as a catalyst for development by opening public datasets.

Prosus is committed to supporting this vision by establishing a Global AI Centre in Amsterdam, expanding its own AI team fivefold over two years, and investing in local startups.

Fabricio Bloisi, CEO of Prosus, states: “The Netherlands is uniquely positioned to lead in the next wave of innovation, with brilliant founders, an abundance of talent and high-income consumers.” He emphasizes that Prosus is prepared to contribute significantly toward building future European AI companies.

Constantijn van Oranje, Special Envoy at Techleap, adds: “The Dutch AI ecosystem is brimming with potential, but that’s not enough to win… We must raise our collective ambition.”
