Medtronic has announced the broad commercial launch of its MiniMed 780G system in the United States, now integrated with the Instinct sensor made by Abbott. The launch follows clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration earlier this year, allowing the system to be shipped to customers nationwide.

The Instinct sensor is based on Abbott’s latest continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology. It is described as the smallest and thinnest sensor available for patient use, with a wear time of up to 15 days. When paired with the MiniMed 780G system, it provides real-time glucose readings that enable automated insulin adjustments every five minutes.

Dr. Steve Edelman, founder and director of Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD.org), commented on the new integration: “Bringing together the Instinct sensor, made by Abbott, with the excellent algorithm of the MiniMed 780G system creates an extremely effective combination. With the MiniMed 780G system, my patients have seen improved time in range and now with the Instinct sensor it’s a seamless experience,” he said. “Feedback from the early customer pilot program has been very positive and matches what my colleagues and I are seeing in our clinics. I’m thrilled that the Instinct sensor is now available so that more people living with type 1 diabetes will get access to this life-changing technology improving their day-to-day experience dealing with this difficult condition.”

The addition of the Instinct sensor expands Medtronic’s portfolio, which also includes other sensors such as Simplera Sync and Guardian 4. This expansion is part of Medtronic’s strategy to offer a wider range of options for diabetes care.

Que Dallara, executive vice president and president of Medtronic Diabetes, stated: “This milestone marks an important next step in our work to bring the proven clinical outcomes of our MiniMed 780G system to more people living with diabetes. With this launch, we’re expanding a smart dosing ecosystem built for choice, so every person can find a solution that fits their life. We exist to make life with diabetes easier and more predictable, so people living with diabetes can enjoy greater freedom and better health every day. Our goal is to deliver confidence and peace of mind, so everyone—including loved ones—can live boldly without compromise.”

The MiniMed 780G system is Medtronic’s most advanced automated insulin delivery platform. It automatically adjusts insulin delivery every five minutes based on real-time glucose data provided by CGM sensors like Instinct.

Abbott’s Instinct sensor distinguishes itself by offering fewer insertions due to its extended wear time and discreet design while maintaining accuracy.

Medtronic Diabetes continues its mission to make diabetes management more predictable through ongoing innovation in CGM technology and intelligent dosing systems.

Medtronic plc is headquartered in Galway, Ireland, employs over 95,000 people globally across more than 150 countries, and offers technologies addressing around 70 health conditions including cardiac devices and surgical robotics.

Forward-looking statements from Medtronic are subject to risks described in filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
