Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines, has confirmed an order for 20 additional Airbus A330-900 aircraft. This move will expand Malaysia Airlines’ future A330neo fleet to a total of 40 aircraft. The announcement coincided with the visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to France.
The decision to select the A330neo was initially made in 2022 as part of MAG’s widebody fleet renewal strategy, with an original commitment for 20 aircraft. Of these, four have already been delivered and are operating on routes from Kuala Lumpur to destinations such as Melbourne, Auckland, and Bali.
Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, Group Managing Director of MAG, stated that “the A330neo continues to deliver the right balance of operational efficiency, range, and cabin comfort” necessary for supporting their network and growth strategy. He emphasized the aircraft’s fuel efficiency and its suitability for both regional and long-haul routes. Ismail added that this order aligns with their vision of building a fleet ready for sustainable growth while offering consistent value to passengers.
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business, expressed pride in strengthening ties with MAG through this expanded order. He described it as a “strong endorsement” of the A330neo’s performance and popularity among premium airlines worldwide.
The A330-900 model is equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and can fly non-stop up to 7,200 nautical miles or approximately 13,300 kilometers. It features Airbus’ Airspace cabin design which enhances passenger experience with more space, improved lighting systems, and advanced entertainment options.
As of May 2025, the A330 Family had secured over 1,800 firm orders from more than 130 customers globally. The A330neo is also designed to operate using up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), aiming for full SAF capability by 2030.
