Ignitis Renewables has completed its first solar project in Latvia, marking a significant development in the company’s expansion within the Baltic region. The Vārme solar farm, situated in Kuldīga municipality, is now operational and covers 110 hectares with 156,000 solar panels. The facility has a total installed capacity of 94 megawatts (MW) and is expected to provide renewable energy for more than 40,000 households annually.

Darius Maikštėnas, CEO of Ignitis Group, stated: “Vārme solar farm constitutes an important step in the development of green energy as it is our first solar project in Latvia to reach commercial operation date. We are actively expanding our presence in this market and contributing to the growth of local renewable generation. Moreover, we are strengthening the foundation for green projects across the Baltics, which is an essential prerequisite for making our region one of the most competitive in Europe in terms of energy prices.”

The Vārme project is one of three large-scale solar farms that Ignitis Renewables is developing in Latvia. Construction continues on two additional sites: Stelpe (145 MW) and Tume (174 MW). Once all three are complete, their combined capacity will exceed 400 MW and supply nearly 200,000 households with renewable electricity each year.

Ignitis Renewables reports that it works closely with local communities and municipalities during project development. The company implements financial support initiatives and follows high environmental standards as part of its commitment to building a cleaner and more reliable energy system throughout the Baltics.

The investment for the Vārme solar farm—including acquisition and construction—totals approximately EUR 66 million. The facility will operate under market conditions with its output supporting Latvia’s supply of green energy.
