Goodyear and EDP have inaugurated a new solar photovoltaic installation at Goodyear’s facilities in Luxembourg, with a total capacity of 7 megawatt-peak (MWp). The opening ceremony was attended by Lex Delles, Luxembourg Minister of the Economy, SME, Energy, and Tourism, as well as representatives from both companies.
The project was initiated in 2024 through Enerdeal, an energy company based in Luxembourg that EDP acquired in 2023. The installation consists of 5 MWp on the Tire Plant and Goodyear Innovation Center rooftops and 2 MWp on carport structures at the Innovation Center parking lot. Together, these systems are expected to generate approximately 6.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually for onsite use at Goodyear.
Goodyear has now completed its fifth solar installation in Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) and eleventh globally. The company aims to transition all manufacturing operations to renewable electricity by 2030 and to full renewable energy by 2040.
In addition to generating renewable energy, the solar carports provide vehicle shelter and utilize existing parking areas efficiently. In Luxembourg, such installations help make productive use of spaces like public or commercial parking lots for clean energy generation.
“Goodyear has a global goal to transition its manufacturing operations and processes to all renewable electricity by 2030 and to all renewable energy by 2040. Today’s announcement puts us one step closer to this goal,” said Alex Schumann, Director Manufacturing Luxembourg at Goodyear.
EDP entered the Belgium-Luxembourg region in 2023 after acquiring Enerdeal. EDP is recognized as a leading player in distributed generation projects globally among European-based companies. Over more than ten years, it has installed about three gigawatt-peak (GWp) of solar distributed generation capacity for business and residential clients worldwide. Enerdeal continues its expansion under EDP ownership with over fifteen years of experience in Luxembourg’s market. The group operates internationally with more than 150 thousand installations across Europe, Asia Pacific, North America, and Brazil.
EDP is present across Europe, North America, South America, and Asia Pacific with activities spanning renewable generation assets—including wind (onshore/offshore), solar power plants—and hydroelectricity. Its portfolio totals an installed capacity of around 32 GW. About ninety percent of EDP’s generated power comes from renewables; it aims for net-zero emissions by 2040 while expanding grid infrastructure needed for the energy transition.
