EDP, a leader in renewable energy, has partnered with MERLIN Properties to supply clean energy to Portugal’s first carbon-neutral data center campus. The campus is being developed by MERLIN Edged in Vila Franca de Xira, near Lisbon. This collaboration aims to address the increasing demand for renewable energy solutions for technological infrastructures.
EDP plans to implement its largest single-site decentralized solar project, potentially reaching up to 100 MWp of installed capacity. This initiative marks a significant step toward establishing the Iberian Peninsula as a digital and technology hub in Europe.
The partnership will enable MERLIN Edged to access renewable electricity around the clock. The campus will be powered by its own energy, enhancing efficiency, reducing costs, and contributing to lower carbon emissions. The projects are being developed simultaneously to ensure clean energy supply from the start of the campus’s operation.
Miguel Stilwell d’Andrade, CEO of EDP, stated that the rapid expansion of AI is driving data center development and increasing demand for renewable energy projects. He emphasized EDP’s commitment to decarbonization and supporting major technology companies.
Ismael Clemente, CEO of MERLIN, highlighted the growing market driven by technological evolution and digital consumption. He noted their data centers’ sustainable practices and expressed pride in partnering with EDP for a sustainable energy supply.
EDP is recognized globally for long-term renewable energy contracts and leads in decentralized solar projects across Europe.
