Amazon Web Services (AWS) and SAP SE have announced a new collaboration to provide SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. This initiative is aimed at supporting organizations in highly regulated industries across Europe with advanced digital sovereignty solutions, while also enabling innovation in artificial intelligence.

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud, scheduled to launch its first region in Brandenburg, Germany by the end of 2025, will be independent from existing AWS regions and backed by an intended €7.8 billion investment from Amazon. The new offering is designed to help public sector organizations and regulated industries meet requirements related to data residency, operational autonomy, and resilience.

David Brown, vice president of Compute and Machine Learning at AWS, stated: “We’re delighted that SAP Sovereign Cloud capabilities will be available on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. This will give organizations more choice in how they meet their sovereignty requirements while leveraging best-in-class cloud technologies. SAP and AWS share a mutual vision – we want to ensure that our customers have access to some of the most advanced sovereignty solutions available, so organizations can focus on innovation and driving tangible outcomes. We’re looking forward to our ongoing collaboration with SAP and seeing the ways that organizations across Europe will innovate with the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.”

SAP’s Sovereign Cloud offerings are security-focused solutions designed for compliance with industry standards in government and regulated sectors. These services are already available on AWS infrastructure in several countries including Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Canada, and India. The extension of these capabilities to Europe marks a significant milestone for both companies’ partnership.

The initial set of SAP solutions available through this collaboration will include SAP Business Technology Platform and SAP Cloud ERP. These platforms aim to provide a secure foundation for managing critical business processes and sensitive data while supporting compliance with relevant regulations.

Thomas Saueressig, Member of the Executive Board of SAP SE for Customer Services and Delivery, said: “With our expanded SAP Sovereign Cloud offerings, we’re enabling customers across all industries to harness the full power of cloud innovation and AI. By deploying the SAP Sovereign Cloud portfolio on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, customers gain access to our comprehensive suite of sovereign cloud solutions, further strengthened by our trusted, long-standing partnership with Amazon Web Services.”

The planned AWS European Sovereign Cloud will operate independently from non-EU infrastructure. It aims to provide strong technical controls as well as legal protections for users needing robust security assurances.

AWS has been providing cloud services since 2006 and continues expanding its global footprint. The company currently operates over 240 services across 38 geographic regions worldwide.
