Beverage machine manufacturer Krones AG is leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance the transportation efficiency of its machinery. The company has implemented a digital AI-supported system for 3D measurement, which allows for accurate and consistent assessment of irregular packages intended for shipping. This technology aims to streamline transportation processes, reduce downtime costs due to measurement errors, and improve environmental sustainability.
Krones specializes in manufacturing machines and lines for producing, filling, and packaging beverages and liquid foods. The company encounters challenges in measuring irregularly shaped packages to ensure they fit special pallets precisely, thereby minimizing costs associated with reordering pallets and delays. Previously, manual measurements were required for packages exceeding two meters in dimension—a process often marked by difficulty and time consumption.
The introduction of advanced AI Vision technology enables standardized and precise measurements through computer vision. In Krones’ pilot setup, LiDAR cameras are used alongside weighing procedures to digitally measure packages. These cameras emit light pulses that help generate synchronized 3D images from various angles. The collected data is processed on-site using edge computing on a platform specifically developed for AI applications, seamlessly integrating into Krones’ logistics processes.
Elisabeth Hölzl, responsible for Corporate Logistics Processes at Krones, stated: “By utilizing AI-supported measurement technology, we have the potential to significantly enhance the accuracy and speed of our packaging processes in the future. This leads to optimize the use of transport capacity and significant cost savings. The environmental impact of transportation can be reduced.”
Klaus Werner, Director Business Customers at Telekom Deutschland, commented: “AI enables us to quickly capture and flexibly analyze data. With precise 3D object detection through AI Vision, we are setting new standards for manufacturing and transportation for numerous industries, demonstrating the potential of AI applications for a more transparent, cost-efficient, and future-ready logistics chain.”
Krones AG is headquartered in Neutraubling, Germany. The company plans, develops, and manufactures machines as well as complete lines for process technology in filling and packaging fields.
